Core Technology

The measurement of RF emissions is at the core of our technological offering and is available in multiple forms, most appropriate to the application – helicopter mounted for aerial assessments, handheld for pedestrian-based assessments, and magnetically mountable for vehicle-based assessments.

The founder and CEO of our USA partner, John Lauletta, in collaboration with the Ohio State University High Voltage Laboratory, developed a systematic approach for measuring RF emissions from electricity grid infrastructure in 2006. These RF emissions are a result of partial discharge. John and his team identified these as a leading pre-fail indicator of the health of grid components, such as conductors and insulators. Additionally, a set of algorithms were developed based upon forensic like failure mode analysis of statistically relevant components.

Productisation of the technology has resulted in the measurement of 11 million infrastructure elements for utility clients across North America. Spanning 15 years, this has enabled the creation of a proprietary database of overhead equipment failure with regional insights.

Patents protecting the research and development of this core technology, as well as the processing algorithms and software in the US (5) and in international (7) markets, are held by our partner, Exacter Inc.

Consumption-based Pricing

With increasing need to support elasticity in demand and focus on core competencies, many organisations, large and small, are moving to the purchase of 'as a service' models.

Grid Analytics has developed a subscription-based pricing model which enables the utilities to secure a full turnkey service for review of grid infrastructure on as needed basis. This includes equipment, cloud services, analytics on the gathered data, and helicopter flights. This simplifies the task with no need to purchase and maintain equipment, or staff to be trained in operations. Grid Analytics takes on-board the capital risk, as well as the on-gong skills necessary to deliver the data and insights.

Digital Transformation

With most utilities having organically developed their own operational processes over time, it is important that the data gathered by Grid Analytics is seamlessly integrated into the utility’s own systems.

Grid Analytics works in collaboration with client to take the results of assessments – location, issue, component and maintenance merit, to apply a service criticality factor to the data which is input into a prioritised maintenance plan.

Integration with Strategic Asset Management Tools

Strategic asset management methodologies are evolving to embrace condition-based risk management (CBRM).

Grid Analytics aims to leverage our strategic asset management expertise to support clients in the integration of evidence-based data that is gathered by our assessments.

Use of Analytics and Artificial Intelligence

The volume of data being gathered naturally increases with the number of assessments. The ability to harness this data will enable clients to understand trends and patterns, as well as the ability to leverage artificial intelligence to develop insights and recommendations on maximising value delivered from the infrastructure.
